IONIZATION OF FAST HYDROGEN ATOMS IN A STRONG MAGNETIC FIELD (IONIZATSIYA BYSTRYKH ATOMOV VODORODA V SILNOM MAGNITNOM POLE),

Abstract

The article describes briefly the results of preliminary experiments to determine the fraction, alpha, of 30-kev hydrogen atoms ionized by a Lorentz force in a magnetic field with an intensity of up to 60 kilooersteds. Unlike Sweetman's experiments, in which the value of alpha was estimated from the flux of neutrals produced by the charge transfer of the trapped ions, this study made direct measurements of the number of ions formed when a beam of neutral hydrogen atoms passes through a magnetic field.
