AN EXPERIMENTAL INVESTIGATION BY FORCE AND SURFACE PRESSURE MEASUREMENTS OF A WING IMMERSED IN A PROPELLER SLIPSTREAM. PART I: FORCE AND MOMENT MEASUREMENTS,
Abstract
An investigation was made in the NAE 6-ft x 9-ft low speed wind tunnel to obtain lift, drag, and pitching moment data for wings immersed in a propeller slipstream. Three wing configurations were tested with various flap deflections and propeller thrust coefficients and through a range of wing incidences from 0 to 120 deg. The data reduction procedure was chosen to permit isolation of the wing forces from the net forces on the complete model. The results of a comparison of the isolated propeller and propeller-wing tests indicate a slight increase in propeller thrust due to the presence of a wing in the slipstream. A simple theory is derived for relating the lift and drag characteristics of the wing in the presence of the propeller slipstream to those of the wing without slipstream. The calculated values agree well with the experimental observations. (Author)
