RESIDUAL STRESS DETERMINATION IN 20 MM HEI M56A3 SHELL BODIES.

Abstract

A technique was used for obtaining the type and an approximation of the magnitude of residual stress in 20 mm HEI M56A3 shell bodies manufactured by three different processes: machining; machining and cold nosing; and blank, cup, and draw methods. The examination consisted of slicing off rings transverse to the longitudinal axis and then slitting them. This procedure gives an estimate of the tangential stresses. Longitudinal stress measurements were also made by slicing a horseshoe section from the center of the shell body, but the results were not conclusive. (Author)
