INVESTIGATION OF STREAMWISE VORTEX SYSTEMS GENERATED IN CERTAIN CLASSES OF CURVED FLOW, PART I.

Abstract

A survey of experimental evidence of the appearance of stream-wise directed vortices in fluid flow is given. Detailed information on the experimental techniques used is also included in order to facilitate correct interpretation of the experimental results. Based on these results the Taylor experiments concerning the fluid motion between two rotating cylinders is examined and the point of view is forwarded that the appearance of such vortices is a fundamental concept in all fluid flows. This idea is being supported by an analytic investigation of three-dimensional fluid flow equations whereby the appearance of stream-wise directed vortices is exhibited. It is shown how such vortices may appear in a fluid flow far away from fixed walls as well as close to such fixed boundaries. (Author)
