AN EXPERIMENTAL STUDY OF THE CONFORMATION POLYISOBUTYLENE IN A HYDRODYNAMIC SHEAR FIELD.

Abstract

A new experiment, based on the theories of light scattering, was developed which allowed both the determination of the deformed macromolecular orientation of polyisobutylene in a shear field as well as the determination of the magnitude of the deformation along its extended and compressed directions. As such, the results give the first set of experimental values of the macromolecular conformation. To further elucidate the nature of the macromolecular deformation, a study of the effect of the shear rate on the intrinsic viscosity was also undertaken.
