MICROWAVE SPECTROSCOPY IN THE MILLIMETRE REGION.

Abstract

The microwave spectrum of the chloroform molecule was observed in the millimetre region and the transitions from J = 11 to 12 to -J = 24 to 25 were investigated. The values of the molecular parameters determined were: Bo = 3302.10 plus or minus 0.02 Mc/sec; DJJ = 1.55 plus or minus 0.03 Kc/sec., and DJJ = 2.50 plus or minus 0.04 Kc/sec. The molecule Methyl Cyanide was also investigated and the transitions J = 6 to 7 to J = 10 to 11 analysed. The values of the molecular parameters determined were: Bo = 91.89.90 plus or minus 0.02, DJJ = 3.8 plus or minus 0.05 Kc./sec., and DJK = 177.0 plus or minus 0.05 Kc/sec. An investigation was also carried out by the principal author in collaboration with others on the optical spectrum of Cr(3+) ions in Spinels at temperatures between 2K and room temperature. The data have been fitted to a crystal field theory which includes spin-orbit coupling and the trigonal field of the D3d site. In addition to fitting the energies and zero field splittings, the theory gave value of R-line intensities and lifetimes which agree with observed values. (Author)
