NATURE OF THE FLOW IN A SWIRL CHAMBER HAVING ENDWALL FLOW REVERSAL.

Abstract

The nature of the flow in a swirl chamber was determined by observing the motion of dye streams injected into water. The chamber consisted of an end section containing an exhaust port as well as a group of injectors intended to produce a toroidal flow and a section containing a set of angled injection ports around the circumference. A plane wall closed the chamber. For flows where the end section input was predominant there was severe turbulence throughout the chamber with no mean motion of any usefulness. For flows where the circumferential injection predominated, the characteristics column-oriented flow seen in simple chambers was observed but with a major oscillation superimposed upon it produced by the end section flow. The observations tended to suggest that the oscillatory motion was produced by surges of fluid between the groups of the end section injectors where they were connected through a common manifold chamber. It was concluded that the design offered no advantage in either the control over the exhaust wall boundary layer or over the interior flow than other chambers that have been examined. (Author)
