MEASUREMENT OF ION-ION NEUTRALIZATION CROSS SECTIONS.

Abstract

The two-body neutralization cross sections were measured for N(+) + O(-), N2(+) + O2(-) and O2(+) + O2(-). The kinetic energy range, in the barycentric coordinate system, covered by the experiment is between 0.1 and 98 eV with an energy resolution of about 0.1 eV. The products of the neutralization cross section, Q, times the relative speed, V, are nearly independent of energy with values close to 0.0000001 cu cm/sec for all three systems studied except below 0.5 eV for the N(+) + O(-) and N2(+) + O2(-) systems, where a rapid increase of Qv with decreasing energy is observed. Details of the superimposed beam technique, used for the neutralization cross section measurements, are discussed. (Author)
