GLUCOSE TOLERANCE IN DOGS EXPOSED TO ALTITUDE AND DRUG ADMINISTRATION: DIPHENHYDRAMINE.

Abstract

The rate of disappearance of intravenously injected glucose from the blood of dogs exposed to a simulated altitude of 27,000 ft. was compared to similar glucose tolerance at ground level. All dogs were maintained on the same PO2 in the inspired air (152 mm. Hg PO2). The blood glucose decay time was also monitored at ground level and altitude after the administration of glucose and diphenhydramine (Benadryl). A significant reduction in the decay rate was observed between drug and nondrug animals at ground level (P less than .05), and between nondrug animals at ground level compared to altitude (P less than .05). The comparison between the drug and nondrug condition at altitude, however, was not significantly different. (Author)
