CHARACTERISTICS OF THE STATE OF LIQUID METALS,
Abstract
The state of molten metals is described by the Frenkel equation into which the dependence of hole formation on temp. was introduced. New acoustic measurements of the ultrasonic velocity dependence on temp. in molten Cu and Ag were made at 1356-1673 and 1234-1813K., resp. The general behavior of linear velocity decrease with temp. was observed. Using the above ultrasonic data for Cu and Ag, previously obtained data for lower-melting metals Cd, Bi, Pb, and Sn, and also literature data for Na and Hg. plots representing the modified Frenkel equation were constructed. The calcd. particle radius agreed well with Pauling's, indicating the correctness of the proposed approach. Values of the incompressible volume, V sub 0, equations for the estn. of the energy of hole formation, hole radii and vols., and the av. hole formation energies are tabulated. The ratio of the hole formation energy to heat of vaporization was correlated with the temp. range of the metal existence in the liquid state, T sub v - T sub m. Molten metals having a high heat of vaporization and a wide temp. range of the liquid state are better described by the Frenkel equation. (Author)
