RECALL WITH KEYWORD FROM TITLE INDEXES: EFFECT OF QUESTION-RELEVANT DOCUMENT CONCEPT CORRESPONDENCE,

Abstract

A keyword-out-of-context (KWOC) index was prepared to titles of 247 documents selected in 100 'real life' subject searches by ten scientists and engineers from indexes to their personal files. One hundred and seventeen documents were also included in the KWOC index to increase the size of the index. Each of the 100 searches conducted originally in the ten personal indexes was searched in the KWOC index by nine graduate science students. A high correlation was found in the searches of the KWOC index between qeustion-relevant title concept correspondence and recall. If this relationship stands up to further testing, recall in a KWOC index can be predicted from an analysis of typical questions and titles of documents relevant to these questions. Reasons for non-recall of relevant documents for the 100 searches are given. The test searches of the KWOC index yielded a direct rather than inverse relationship between recall and precision (relevance). (Author)
