STRUCTURAL INSTABILITY.

Abstract

A brief discussion and visual representation of the instability modes for a wide range of practical bodies is presented and the correlation between theoretical predictions and experimental behavior is examined. The brief resume shows that, generally speaking, our knowledge with regard to the behavior of column and plate-type structures is based upon sound considerations. However, our understanding of the discrepancies between realized and predicted behavior for circular cylindrical shells under axial compression and spherical shells under external pressure loading is less than satisfactory.
