REPEATED DISCONTINUOUS YIELDING OF 2024 ALUMINUM ALLOY,

Abstract

The repeated discontinuous yielding characteristics of 2024 aluminum alloy were determined for different conditions of solution and heat treatment and age hardening. The results are interpreted with reference to microscopic deformation mechanisms and the previously developed analysis of the mechanics of discontinuous yielding. Age hardening was found to suppress strain aging and thereby the occurrence of serrated yielding. The experimental results are in agreement with the predictions of the analysis of discontinuous yielding when it is generalized to include age hardening effects. (Author)
