THE DEEP STRUCTURE OF THE TERRITORY OF THE USSR (GLUBINNOE STROENIE TERRITORIII SSSR),
Abstract
In order to clarify the regularities in the distribution of mineral resources, especially at depths, the development of problems of seismic activity and the solution of substantial problems in geology, it is necessary to study in detail the structure of the earth's crust and the upper mantle, and the character and type of their current processes. Consequently, diverse aspects of geological, geochemical and especially geophysical investigations of the crustal stratum have been widely developed during the recent 10-15 years. At the same time, together with aeromagnetic and gravimetric surveys, by means of which almost the entire territory of the USSR has been covered, deep seismic investigations were carried out, which made it possible to characterize the structural features of the earth's crust of many regions. These investigations were accomplished on 164 profiles for a distance of 52,600 km, including 31,000 km on land and more than 21,000 km at sea. Approximately 25,000 km of seismic profiles on land were carried out by the method of deep seismic sounding (DSS). Profile seismological surveys, investigations from the stations 'Zemlya', and also other deep geophysical operations, in particular magnetotelluric soundings (MTS), have been recently used in conjunction with DSS for the study of the crustal structure.
