GEOLOGICAL-STRUCTURAL ZONING OF SAKHLIN ISLAND (GEOLOGO-STRUKTURNOE RAYONIROVANIE O SAKHALINA),

Abstract

The problems of tectonics and the geological-structural zoning of Sakhalin Island are of importance not only in connection with the condition that the island is included in the formation of the Soviet zone of the Pacific tectonic ring, the structural interpretation of which is one of the most important problems of recent geotectonics, but also because the development of prospecting operations for gas and oil requires a thorough evaluation of oil and gas prospects of every region of the island in question. During recent years more than ten tectonic diagrams of this territory have been published (Alekseychik, 1963; Kapitsa, 1963; Milashin, 1960; Pushcharovskiy, 1964 and others), which differ both with respect to geological structures of a number of regions, and also with regard to the principle itself of the tectonic zoning under consideration.
