Abstract

The object of the study was to identify and measure the activity of nine long-lived beta-active fragment isotopes present simultaneously in the air of certain radiochemical plants: cesium-137, strontium-90, yttrium-90, ruthenium-106, rhodium-106, cerium-144, praseodymium-144, zirconium-95, and niobium-95 (all the isotopes except cesium-137 were present in pairs at equilibrium). The radiometric analysis of samples of aerosol particles on a filter involved the use of beta and gamma radiation spectra. A scintillation gamma spectrometer was used for Cs(137), Rh(106), Zr(95), Nb(95), and Ce(144), which emit an intense gamma radiation. A scintillation beta spectrometer was employed for isotopes which do not emit gamma quanta (Sr(90), Ru(106)) and isotopes having a small yield of gamma radiation per beta decay (Pr(144), Y(90)). The instrument employed is described, and the instrument spectra of the mixtures of isotopes are discussed.
