FALLOUT RADIOACTIVITY IN THE NORTH PACIFIC OCEAN: DATA COMPILATION OF SR-90 AND CS-137 CONCENTRATIONS IN SEAWATER,

Abstract

During a continuing program of surface and deep-seawater sampling in the North Pacific Ocean, bulk seawater samples from three Ocean-Weather-Station locations and other locations have been processed and analyzed. The radiochemical determinations to date for Sr-90 and Cs-137 are tabulated along with corresponding hydrographic data. The general handling and the sampling methods are described, together with the analytical procedures presently employed at NRDL. A new sampling system being developed is compared with the existing bulk-sampling method. Analytical results to date show that the surface-water content of Sr-90 and Cs-137 varies for different sampling locations. Seasonal variations, however, have not been observed. The existence of fallout radioactivity in the intermediate and deep waters has been observed in some of the vertical profile samples obtained. (Author)
