BEACON RANGE ALTITUDE MONITOR SYSTEM (AIRBORNE).

Abstract

The development of a feasibility model of an airborne range/altitude monitor system and the results of flight tests of the system are described. The system interrogates ATCRBS transponder-equipped aircraft within the area of interest, using a fixed beam alternating between Mode A (identification) and Mode C (altitude). The replies are processed, and those within preselected altitude limits are displayed, showing the range and identification of the nearest two aircraft. The area of coverage is antenna-limited to approximately plus or minus 100 degrees in azimuth and plus or minus 20 degrees in elevation. Range is design-limited to 60 nmi. Height layers up to plus or minus 2500 feet may be monitored, with increments of 500 feet. (Author)
