DEVELOPMENT OF HIGH STRENGTH MAGNESIUM-BASE SHEET ALLOY.

Abstract

A high strength magnesium sheet alloy has been developed, nominal composition of the alloy is 9 percent yttrium, 1 percent zinc, 0.5 percent zirconium, balance magnesium. Some of the shop and service characteristics of the alloy have been determined: tensile properties, creep properties, fatigue properties, corrosion resistance in salt water, corrosion resistance when protected by standard magnesium finishing system, weldability and strength of weldments. A high strength magnesium extrusion alloy with the nominal composition of 9.5 percent yttrium, 0.5 percent zirconium, balance magnesium has also been developed. (Author)
