THE INTERACTION OF PLASMOIDS WITH MAGNETIC FIELDS.

Abstract

Plasma from small button-type sources are investigated. The temperature, velocity peak density and total mass are determined. The mechanisms of production of this plasma are discussed. The plasma is directed transversely across homogeneous magnetic fields and the subsequent interaction is studied. The movement and configuration of the plasma both across and along the field lines, and the dependence on plasma ion mass and magnetic field strength are determined. Internal plasma structure is probed and internal plasma motion (rigid motion) is confirmed. Theoretical work on plasma vortices is reviewed and compared to the experiment. Evidence from a Plasma Camera is presented which indicates a preferred direction for the growth of plasma protuberances. (Author)
