WIND MEASUREMENTS FROM BUOYS: A SAMPLING SCHEME.

Abstract

Long records of wind are desired to test the influence of lower frequency atmospheric stress variations on the ocean. A spectrum of wind variations covering periods from 20 days to two seconds has been formed using measurements collected with several sampling rates. Since the purpose of the measurements is to define low frequency variations, sampling schemes to minimize the influence of high frequency variations within the data capacity of the instrument are desired. Several sampling schemes for describing low frequency variations were tested using an oversampled time series. An optimum sampling procedure, in the sense that it minimizes the amount of contamination variability folded into the frequency range of interest for a limited number of data cycles, was found.
