FLUCTUATION PHENOMENA AND PHASE TRANSITIONS IN CONDENSED SYSTEMS.

Abstract

The scattering of light by BaTiO3 near the critical Curie point is described as a function of temperature. An inverse fourth-power relationship is found for the intensity, implying a long-ranged correlation function. The X-ray scattering of quartz near the alpha-beta transition is found not to show any unusual increase, in distinction to light-scattering observations. Fluctuations in anisotropy may account for this behavior. (Author)
