CRITICAL CURRENTS AND THE ONSET OF RESISTANCE IN SUPERCONDUCTORS.

Abstract

The report describes the intrinsic resistive transition in small pieces of superconducting material. Two recent theoretical approaches are described: a theory of the disappearance of resistance as T approaches T sub c (the transition temperature) from above; and a theory of the appearance of resistance in thin filaments as T approaches T sub c from below. Although the approaches mentioned appear to be, and indeed physically are, two ways of looking at the same phenomenon, the theories are quite distinct. (Author)
