RESEARCH DIRECTED TOWARD THE STUDY OF CHEMICAL REACTIONS OF EXCITED ATMOSPHERIC SPECIES.

Abstract

Two series of experiments are described. In series A, line absorption measurements on the resonance line triplets of O and N were analyzed and the oscillator strengths of these transitions are determined. Sigma-gf is found to be 0.19 plus or minus 0.03 for O, and 0.87 plus or minus 0.19 for N. Information is also obtained on the deactivation of metastable N(2)D) by Ar, N2, or O2. In series B, the fluorescence of NO2 was studied by monochromatic excitation at 4360, 5460, and 5780A, and monochromatic measurement of fluorescence from the incident wavelength to 7850A. Lifetimes are also measured using the phase shift method and modulated exciting light. Strong evidence is presented for the efficient vibrational relaxation of the excited state. The radiative lifetime of NO2* is found to be 55 plus or minus 6 microsec, and negative evidence is presented for the contribution of another excited state of shorter lifetime. (Author)
