DIURNAL WIND VARIATIONS IN THE STRATOSPHERE.

Abstract

The Butler-Small model is solved for wind fields. The effect of secondary temperature variation, due to adiabatic expansion and compression associated with the tidal oscillation, is studied to see if it might be additive to the primary variation due to ozone absorption. It is found to be out of phase and reduces rather than enhances the diurnal temperature variation, although the complete analysis using negative eigenvalues of the equivalent depth for the diurnal variation is not attempted. The harmonic analysis of MRN wind data for North American sites is attempted using standard analysis techniques at WSMR, AMR, and Wallops Island. A folding technique is employed at PMR, Fort Churchill, and Fort Greely to obtain estimates of the harmonic coefficients despite the fact that data are virtually non-existent during the night at these sites.
