MACHINE RECOGNITION OF HANDWRITTEN NUMBERS,

Abstract

A method of recognition of handwritten digits according to elements of shape is described. The sign of the first derivative of a number element is taken as the principal distinguishing feature. The breakdown of a number into elements and the determination of the signs of the first derivative are accomplished with the aid of an electron-optical device moving the image of the number in front of a stack of photocells. The received information is automatically compared with the standard and the number is determined. A block diagram of the device and the levels of the algebra of logic describing the logic elements of the system are presented. When a P13 type semiconductor triode is used in the logic circuits, the electronic part of the device assures a readout rate of 35,000 digit signs per sec. (Author)
