STUDIES OF TRIVALENT RARE-EARTH OXIDE-BERYLLIUM OXIDE SYSTEMS,

Abstract

Experiments were conducted on products of reactions between trivalent rare earth oxides and beryllium oxides and on the equilibrium of the Gd2O3-BeO system. Phase diagrams of the Gd2O3-BeO system were plotted based on the analytic results obtained by three methods, viz., quenching, polarizing microscope, and x-ray diffraction. A new biaxial crystalline phase (n sub p = 1.89, n sub g = 1.94, angle between axes = 90 deg.) was found having parameters a = 3.603 plus or minus 0.003 A, b = 9.85 plus or minus 0.03 A c = 10.51 plus or minus 0.02 A. The new crystalline phase shows a diffraction pattern similar to that of yttrium oxide when being decomposed at 1460C. Chemical composition of the new phase was determined to be Gd2O3.2BeO. (Author)
