UNDERWATER SOUND MEASUREMENTS FROM AN AIRCRAFT,

Abstract

Sonobuoys can be used for underwater sound measurements from an aircraft in flight. In testing the feasibility of this idea, two series of field experiments were performed to yield data on bottom reflectivity and volume reverberation over wide areas of the Atlantic. Standard sonobuoys were modified by adding calibration circuitry to permit absolute measurements. The method yields great rapidity and mobility in data collection relative to shipboard measurements.
