DETECTION OF ATMOSPHERIC OXYGEN USING A TUNED RUBY LASER,

Abstract

A Q-switched ruby laser has been provided with a tuning capability by employing a cryogenic temperature control. Atmospheric transmission of the laser output over a 9.8 km path was measured while the laser was tuned in the wavelength region of the O2 absorption line at 6941.22A. Absorption of the laser output at this wavelength is clearly indicated by the data. Resolution of the system and factors affecting it are discussed, and possible refinements are considered with a view toward atmospheric probing. (Author)
