INSTRUMENT FOR SUTURING THE AURICULAR APPENDAGE OF THE HEART.
Abstract
This instrument is designed to suture auricular appendages with a diameter up to 23 mm. The suturing is done quickly requiring one operation using tantalum staples. Tantalum-niobium, U-shaped stapes are utilized in place of conventional ligature. The wire stables are 0.25 mm thick; the center segment is 4.0 mm long, and the terminal segments are 3.0 mm long. Suturing the auricular stump with tantalum stables is, at present, the best of known methods (purse-string suture, circular ligature, continuous suture). Tantalum staples do not give rise to necrosis or to manifestations of pericarditis. The double row arrangement of staples insures that the suture is hermitically sealed without cutting off blood supply to the stump. The instrument can set a row of sutures up to 35 mm. in length.
