PROPERTIES OF THE ALASTRIM VIRUS

Abstract

This report states that the alastrim virus differs hardly at all from the virus of natural smallpox with respect to pathogenicity to laboratory animals, nature of cytopathological action, morphology of plaques and intracellular inclusions in tissue culture, type of lesion on the chorionallantoic envelope of chick embryos, hemagglutination activity, antigenic properties, and sensitivity to antibiotics. Together with this was disclosed the existence of certain differences in the properties of the viruses of alastrim and natural smallpox: less resistance on the part of alastrim virus to high temperature, ultraviolet radiation, and the action of chloramine and phenol. Moreover the alastrim virus has a lower temperature limit for development of cytopathological action than does smallpox virus.
