AN INVESTIGATION OF ROCKET ENGINE SOUND SUPPRESSION BY WATER INFLOW TO A SUBMERGED FLAME DEFLECTOR,
Abstract
With the advent of multi-million pound-thrust boosters, consideration must be given to methods of attenuating the engine noise level in the vicinity of the firing site. It was proposed that a static test or launch facility be located at a lake or similar basin where a flame deflector could be submerged in the lake with the inlet and outlet above the water level. At the time of the firing, flood gates around the deflector inlet would be opened, and the lake water utilized to cool the flame deflector and attenuate the noise produced by the engines. (Author)
