ELECTRON BEAM PURIFICATION OF ALUMINA,

Abstract

An electron beam zone melting process was developed for the purification of alumina. Alumina comparable in purity with the best obtainable by other methods has been prepared and the technique is almost certainly capable of producing still purer material. The zone melted product takes the form of a thin sheet which is extensively cracked. Attempts at developing a method for re-melting the pure alumina into monolithic form have not been successfully concluded, but considerable progress has been made towards a method of producing large diameter pure supplies.
