A SYSTEM FOR AUTOMATED SLEEP ANALYSIS AND PHYSIOLOGICAL data reduction.

Abstract

Hand methods of physiological data analysis are so laborious and cumbersome that they may seriously limit some research. Although both analog devices and general purpose digital computers have been used for biomedical data retrieval, a hybrid analog-digital system has important advantages for studies of sleep phenomena and biological rhythms. Such a system, used in our laboratory, is described. Physiological data including electroencephalogram, electromyogram, electro-oculogram, electrocardiogram, actograph, behavioral data, etc., are recorded on analog magnetic tape. The analog tapes are then played back off-line at 32 times the recording speed through a special electronic processor. Signal recognition, digitizing, counting, editing, labeling, and recording on digital magnetic tape are performed by the electronic processor. The digital tape then forms an input for a digital computer program, which determines sleep stages and performs statistical analyses of the physiological data. Computer processing requires less than 01 percent of the real-time data duration. (Author)
