THE HISTORY OF THE GEOLOGICAL STUDY OF ANTARCTICA (ISTORIYA GEOLOGICHESKOGO IZUCHENIYA ANTARKTIKI),

Abstract

Geological investigations of the continent had begun toward the end of the 19th century and were especially intensive after World War II in the search for strategic raw materials. The geological study of the southern continent has been however, under preparation for many years by geographic, oceanographic and other research carried on in Antarctica. In recent decades, the geological study was conducted simultaneously with the accumulation of new data on geography, hydrography, glaciology and geophysics of the territory being investigated.
