USE OF LITHIUM PEROXIDE FOR ATMOSPHERE REGENERATION.

Abstract

The chemistry of lithium peroxide was studied for use as a nonregenerative air revitalization material for oxygen supply and carbon dioxide removal. The use of catalysts to accelerate the decomposition of the hydrogen peroxide formed as an intermediate in the reaction of lithium peroxide with water vapor was investigated. Catalyst screening studies, kinetic studies of the reactions of several lithium peroxide formulations with water vapor and carbon dioxide, and complete chemical kinetic studies for the air revitalization reactions of a peroxide/silver-metal powder formulation were performed. A commercially available lithium peroxide pellet formulation was evaluated for air regeneration purposes. The thermal stability characteristics of various lithium peroxide formulations were ascertained. (Author)
