DEVELOPMENT AND TESTING OF AIR BALLAST SYSTEMS.

Abstract

The report covers the final phase of the study of air ballast systems during which time two systems were designed, fabricated, and test flown. The primary objective of the two test flights was to verify experimentally the practicability and theoretical feasibility of air ballast systems. Because ballast bag failures were experienced in both flights, these objectives were not met. Some data on balloon temperatures and air ballast weights were obtained, however, giving some experimental verification of the air ballast equations and suggestions for future efforts in this area. Included in the report are detailed descriptions of the two air ballast systems flown and recommendations for future systems. (Author)
