A METHOD FOR COMPUTING FLOAT PLATFORM MOTIONS IN WAVES.
Abstract
A new procedure for predicting the motions in waves of ocean platforms supported by slender vertical floats is presented. The equations of motion for harmonic oscillation in heave, surge and pitch are solved using experimental information describing the hydrodynamic forces acting on the floats. These hydrodynamic forces are obtained from tests conducted on a single isolated float and are expressed as two separable parts: one due to the disturbance imposed by the waves acting as though the vehicle were completely restrained, and one due to the motion of the vehicle as though there were no disturbance. Comparison of the measured motions of a free four-float vehicle with motions computed according to the new procedure reveal good agreement. This approach should be useful for design development and for structural load evaluation for multi-float vehicles as well as for other types of marine structures. (Author)
