FACE MILLING HIGH-STRENGTH MATERIALS.

Abstract

An investigation of the wear characteristics of present tool materials was made to determine those areas of potential improvement in futute applied manufacturing research projects. Preliminary tests included both steel and non-ferrous grades of Tungsten carbide, Tungsten-base high speed steel and cast alloy tool materials. Materials machined included L-605, Hastelloy X, Hastelloy 56, and Rene 41. Test results showed that improvements in tool life can be made through the use of proper tool design and correct tool material, and tool life is affected by heterogeneous microstructures. (Author)
