ANALYSIS OF THE MECHANISM OF ACTION OF THE NERVE GROWTH FACTOR.

Abstract

The research project carried out during the last two years has been centered on the study of the nerve growth factor (NGF). This is a unique protein endowed with growth promoting activity on embryonic sensory and embryonic and mature sympathetic nerve cells. Our investigations centered on the study of the following aspects of the problem: Analysis of the nerve growth effect on the receptive nerve cells at the ultrastructural level. Analysis of the early ultrastructural changes in sympathetic nerve cells following antiserum treatment. Study of the biosynthesis of the NGF in the mouse submaxillary salivary glands. Comparative studies of NGF purified from snake venom and mouse salivary glands. Conformational changes of a specific brain protein. (Author)
