ABSOLUTE CROSS SECTIONS OF THE EXCITATION OF LEVELS OF ALKALI METAL ATOMS BY LOW ENERGY ELECTRONS,

Abstract

The effective cross sections of the excitation of the lower levels of sodium, potassium, rubidium and cesium atoms by collisions with 0-30 eV electrons were measured. Two maxima were found for the resonance levels, one of them being directly at the excitation threshold. It was shown that an extremely sharp drop in the excitation cross sections as n increases is characteristic for the levels of the principal series. The role of cascade transitions during electron excitation of the (2)S-, (2)P- and (2)D- levels was studied in detail. The dependence of the maximal excitation cross sections of the (2)S- and (2)D- levels upon the principal quantum number and the atomic number was established and its analytical form was found. The excitation cross sections of lithium atoms were predicted. The obtained experimental results were compared with the theoretical data. (Author)
