MODE RESPONSE OF A SINUSOIDALLY EXCITED, CIRCULAR BIMORPH.

Abstract

In a series of recent experiments it was observed that the response of underwater horns cannot be predicted by a simple theory. In a subsequent investigation a more detailed description of the response of the horn driver (a circular piezoelectric ceramic Bimorph) was sought. The results of the later investigation are reported here. The dynamic behavior of thin vibrating plates has been the subject of considerable study. This has been done experimentally by means of sand patterns and, in the case of piezoelectric materials (such as quartz), by interferometric techniques. Some results of establishing sand patterns on a sinusoidally driven piezoelectric plate made from ceramic material (PZT4) are given here. It was found that the response of a ceramic thick plate does not obey thin-plate theory, as was noted previously by A. B. Wood with respect to thick steel discs. In addition, thick circular discs apparently do not produce nodal diameters across a vibrating surface. Asymmetric supports apparently cause an increase in acoustic output when compared to symmetrically supported devices. (Author)
