INFLUENCE OF VARIABILITY OF CORIOLIS FORCE ON CHANGE IN GEOPOTENTIAL FIELD IN THE PRESENCE OF MOUNTAINS,

Abstract

The dependence of the Coriolis force on latitude is not taken into account in studies relating to short-range forecasting of the geopotential field for mountainous areas. The purpose of this paper is to present a theoretical analysis of this dependence for a case of predication at the mean level. The methods of operational calculus are used to solve the principal equation of the geopotential problem with given initial conditions. The necessary computations were made on the 'Strela' electronic computer for data pertaining to the Caucasus Mountains, (oriented along the parallel), and for the Rocky Mountains (oriented along the meridian). The forecast was prepared at 0300, 1200, and 2400 hours. It was found that the influence of mountains and the influence of the variability of Coriolis force on the change of the geopotential field increases with time. The influence of mountains oriented along the meridian is greater than that of mountains oriented along the parallel.
