BIT AND MESSAGE ERROR RATES IN ATMOSPHERIC NOISE WITH AND WITHOUT PEAK LIMITING,

Abstract

Measured bit error rates as a function of S/N in various statistical types of atmospheric noise are compared with values obtained from a simple theoretical model both with and without peak limiting using phase coherent detection. Improvement in bit error rates using a peak limiter is shown to be a function of Vd (ratio of the rms noise envelope voltage to the average noise envelope voltage in db). For a fixed number of bits in a message, message error rate improvement in atmospheric noise is shown to be a function of the correlation between atmospheric noise bursts and the message length. This is demonstrated by changing the bit rate, keeping the number of bits in the message constant, and by employing various types of atmospheric noise. (Author)
