SOME ASPECTS OF THE ATMOSPHERIC CIRCULATION OVER THE ALASKA AREA.

Abstract

Data were extracted from monthly 500-mb contour maps of the German Weather Service to compute zonal and meridional indices for the area limited by the 55th and 75th parallel between 130 degrees W and 180 degrees W. The harmonic analysis of the data provided information on the values of the amplitudes of the various harmonics for specified sub-sections of the above region. The behavior of surface pressure gradients over Alaska, the annual variations of temperature, and the changes in circulation patterns as reflected in the displacement of pressure centers at 500 mb were examined to determine a physical explanation of the behavior of the zonal and meridional indices.
