ATMOSPHERIC IMPLICATIONS OF PREDISSOCIATION IN N2,

Abstract

Analysis of the half-widths of the individual rotational absorption lines of N2 at high resolution delta lambda = 0.038A) indicates that all of the lines between 800 and 1000A are broadened by predissociation. This implies that photo-dissociation of atmospheric N2 by solar radiation may be as much as 10,000 times greater than assumed previously and may, indeed, contribute significantly to the over-all rate of production of atomic nitrogen in the upper atmosphere.
