STUDIES ON RESPIRATION, ANESTHESIA, AND RESUSCITATION.

Abstract

Current work under this contract has dealt with the quantitative investigation of the anesthetic requirements of individual patients. Halothane and methoxyflurane were administered initially in vapor doses reported by others to meet anesthetic uptake requirements. Calculations of uptake requirements were made on the basis of organ weights and blood flow and anesthetic tissue solubility to determine whole body uptake requirements as a function of time. These amounts of anesthetic agents were automatically injected into a closed anesthetic circuit by means of an electronic programmer on the basis of body weight. Predictable satisfactory anesthesia was obtained in all cases with only minor modifications of the program. During quantitative methoxyflurane anesthesia, blood concentrations were linearly correlated with intraocular pressure. The correlation of electro-encephalographic patterns with anesthetic blood concentrations were observed to be related to the cumulative anesthetic effect of each anesthetic in an anesthetic mixture. Studies were performed to determine the effect of elevated environmental pressure (hyperbaric chambers) on the performance and reliability of conventional flowmeters. The flowmeter readings observed at various pressures may be readily corrected to obtain actual flow. Equations to express these corrections are reported. (Author)
