A STUDY OF THE MECHANISM OF ELECTRON TRANSFER.
Abstract
This study is concerned with the development of conducting polymers. The report consists of six parts: Preparation of polymeric solvating agents and studies of equilibria between ion pairs and methoxylated polyethylene oxides (glymes). A brief study of conductance of SbCl6(-),CPh3(+) in CH2Cl2 demonstrated that neither of these ions interacts strongly with the solvent. Studies of ion pairs involving dihydroanthracene carbanions and Li(+) and Na(+) cations revealed interesting complexity of the ion pair system. These studies involved spectroscopic and NMR observations. We believe that heterocyclic polymers may provide a most suitable system for studies of conductance. We investigated, therefore, the UV and ESR spectra of a large series of N-heterocyclic aromatics and determined their electron affinities. In kinetic studies we demonstrated the formation of chemically solvated ion pairs, determined their state of solvation as well as the state of solvation of free ions. Finally, we started studies of ionization of aromatic monomers and the chemistry of the resulting radical ions.
