THE DESIGN OF AN OPTIMUM BEAM TRANSMITTANCE METER.

Abstract

The optical system of a standard beam transmittance meter (alpha meter) is examined in a simplified manner to determine the effects of instrument design on readings. Nine instrument parameters are examined and it is found that even under 'ideal' conditions the apparent transmittance, as determined by a conventional device, is related to these instrument parameters. A dual beam design is suggested which appears to allow optical measurements to be made which are independent of instrument size and configuration. (Author)
