MAP COATING CONCEPT STUDIES.

Abstract

The purpose of this investigation was to perform concept studies and necessary supporting experimentation pertaining to the use of protective map coatings by the Army base plants and or field topographic units for the purpose of defining the optimum coatings and coating techniques from the standpoints of durability, effectiveness and cost. The results of the laboratory evaluation yielded ten coating materials that satisfied the technical requirements. Abrasion due to annotation removal and microbial attack were found to be the major causes of map deterioration. Due to other factors involving equipment limitations, logistics and cost, the selection of one optimum coating was possible. It was concluded that a water-base post cross-linking terpolymer, SB-727, was the optimum coating to be applied with the latest design Marcote coating machine. (Author)
